The Benefits of a Full Tang Chef Knife

The tang is the portion of the blade steel that extends into the handle. In a full tang knife, that steel runs the full length and width of the handle, sandwiched between two handle scales that are attached to it with pins, rivets, or adhesive. In a partial tang knife, the steel extends only partway into the handle. The difference in construction has real consequences for durability, balance, and the long-term reliability of the knife.

Why Full Tang Matters for Durability

The junction between blade and handle is the point of greatest stress in a knife. Every cutting stroke transmits force through that junction. Over time, a partial tang handle can loosen, crack, or separate from the blade at that point, particularly if the knife is used heavily or exposed to moisture. A full tang handle, where the steel runs the full length of the handle, distributes that stress across a much larger area and is significantly more resistant to failure at the junction.

This is not a theoretical concern. Partial tang knives that see daily use in a working kitchen fail at the handle junction with regularity. Full tang knives, properly constructed, essentially never fail there. For a knife you plan to use every day for years, the construction difference matters.

Balance and Feel

Full tang construction affects the balance of the knife because the steel running through the handle adds weight to the rear of the blade. This shifts the balance point back toward the handle, which many cooks find more comfortable for extended use. The balance point of a knife, where it rests level when supported at a single point, affects how the knife feels during different cutting tasks and how fatiguing it is to use over time.

There is no universally correct balance point. Some cooks prefer a blade-heavy knife for tasks that involve a lot of downward force. Others prefer a handle-heavy or neutral balance for tasks that involve more horizontal slicing motion. Full tang construction gives the maker more control over where the balance point falls because the weight of the tang can be adjusted by varying the thickness and shape of the steel in the handle.

What to Look For

On a full tang knife, you should be able to see the steel of the tang along the top and bottom edges of the handle, sandwiched between the handle scales. The pins or rivets that secure the scales to the tang should be flush and smooth. Any gap between the handle scales and the tang is a sign of poor construction or a handle that has begun to separate.

On a partial tang knife, the handle is typically a single piece of material with a slot or hole for the tang, and the tang is not visible from the outside. This construction is not inherently bad for light-use knives, but it is not appropriate for a knife intended for daily serious use.
