American Watch Maker The Story of RGM and Roland Murphy
The small, fiercely independent, and proudly American, RGM Watch Company has kept the art of hand-made watchmaking alive under founder Roland G. Murphy’s steady hand.
RGM Watch Company began in 1992 when Roland G. Murphy turned a lifelong passion for mechanical watches into a boutique company in Pennsylvania. From its early days as a small, one-man pursuit, RGM has developed into a respected independent brand known for doing as much as possible in-house; from design, to finishing, machining, and assembly, all on American soil.
Murphy’s approach is quietly uncompromising. Instead of volume, RGM pursues detail: hand-turned (guilloché) dials, hand-applied finishes, individually shaped hands, and movements decorated and assembled by skilled artisans. That commitment produced the Caliber 801 family, a true in-house movement that illustrates RGM’s technical capability and artistic control.
The Pennsylvania Tourbillon and RGM’s other tourbillon pieces are landmark achievements for an American independent. The tourbillon, a rotating escapement cage originally meant to average positional timing errors is one of horology’s most revered complications. RGM’s tourbillons pair visible mechanics with traditional finishing: hand-beveled edges, polished screws, and open-worked dials that showcase the mechanical ballet beneath the crystal. RGM has also produced bespoke and limited pieces combining tourbillons with other high complications, demonstrating both technical mastery and refined aesthetics.
Accessibility within exclusivity
RGM balances exclusivity with direct access. Unlike large, impersonal maisons, RGM maintains close relationships with collectors: accepting bespoke commissions, tailoring details, and offering a level of personal service rare in high watchmaking. That relationship driven model reinforces the value of hand finishing and the maker’s visible hand in each watch. Renowned watch collector Teddy Baldassarre visited Roland’s shop and made a great video showcasing Roland Murphy Watches which can be found here: https://youtu.be/
Roland Murphy and RGM demonstrate that top-tier watchmaking in-house calibers, tourbillons, and meticulous finishing can thrive in a small, independent American studio. Their watches celebrate traditional craft, mechanical ingenuity, and the quiet dedication of a maker’s bench brought to horology.
