The Knives Are the Point — How a Navy SEAL Built a Handcrafted Knife Shop in Las Vegas
There is a knife on the bench right now. It has been there for three days. Chris Osman won't let it leave until it's right.
That standard did not come from a business plan. It came from a three-day trip to Arizona in December 2023.
Chris drove to Scorpion 6 Knives in Arizona to spend time in the shop with maker Shane Magnussen. He had been looking for something and he did not know exactly what. On the third day he ground his first blade. By the time he got back in the car for the drive home, he already knew.
He texted Shane before he hit the highway: send me the links for the equipment.
He has not looked back since.
That is how Tanzo Cutlery began. Not with a business model or a market analysis, but with a man in a garage in Las Vegas who had found the thing he was meant to do next.
Chris Osman spent 12 years in service, 4 years in the Marine Corps and 8 years in the Navy SEAL Teams. That kind of service leaves a specific calibration in a person. A permanent sense of what real standards feel like and a deep discomfort with anything that falls short of them. In 2001, while still on active duty, he opened Tactical Assault Gear out of a retail shop in Imperial Beach, California. At the time, Chris invested $23,000 — his entire life savings — six months before 9/11. Timing, location, his standing within the SEAL Teams, extraordinary talent inside the company, and a fair measure of luck turned that bet into something real. TAG was acquired in 2010 and is still in operation today.
He has built things before. He knows what that process costs.
In 2020, Chris got sober and rebuilt his life around what mattered. He trains Jiu-Jitsu. He hikes, runs, and lifts. He camps and fly fishes. He cooks at home using knives he made himself in his own shop, and he thinks carefully about every tool that earns a place in that kitchen.
Knifemaking arrived in that life not as a business but as a search. He was looking for something that met the same standards the best work in his life had always demanded. Physical. Precise. Unforgiving.
He found it in Shane's shop. He brought it home to Las Vegas.
Tanze Cutlery officially opened in December 2023. Every knife is made one at a time. Each one is signed and numbered by Chris before it leaves the shop. The handles are never repeated. When your knife is done, the handle design it carries is retired. No one else will have it. That is not a marketing line. It is a decision rooted in the same belief that has shaped every chapter of Chris's life: if you are going to do something, make it worth doing.
He will tell you he is not a master knifemaker. He has been at this since late 2023. The craft is deep and the standards are high and he expects to spend the rest of his life not quite arriving.
That is exactly why he does it.
Every knife that leaves this shop is the best work he is capable of at that moment. Signed. Numbered. Gone.
If you have ever owned something made by a person who cared that much, you know what it feels like in your hand.
